Ambra Demontis

Ph.D., Assistant Professor at PRALab


Short biography. Ambra Demontis received the MSc degree in Information technology with honors in 2014 from the University of Cagliari (Italy).

She then received her P.hD. in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in March 2018.

From September 2016 to December 2016, she was Visiting Student at The University of Manchester, in "The Machine Learning and Optimisation group" guided by Prof. Dr. Gavin Brown. Since  2014 she has been working for the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Cagliari, where she currently is an Assistant Professor.


Research interests. Her research interests include:

  • secure/robust machine learning and pattern recognition methods (adversarial learning);
  • kernel methods;

with applications in computer vision, malware detection spam filtering, biometric recognition.


Reviewer activity/memberships. She serves on the program committee of different conferences and workshops, such as the USENIX Security Symposium, IJCAI and DLS, and as a reviewer for several journals, such as TNNLS, TOPS, Machine Learning, and Pattern Recognition.

Ambra Demontis has been one of the chairs of the 13th and 14th ACM Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Security, which are co-located with the The ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS), area chair of the 25th International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), and track chair of the 26th edition of ICPR.

She was newsletter and website editor, vice-chair and now she is chair of the IAPR Technical Committee 1 on Statistical Pattern Recognition Techniques

She served as vice-chair and chair of the IEEE Cagliari Student Branch and its "Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society" (SMC) Chapter.

She is a member of IEEE ACM, SMC, e CVPL (Italian Association for Computer Vision, Pattern recognition and machine learning).


Teaching Activities. Ambra is the lecturer of the bachelor's degree course "Object-oriented programming languages" and of a course for the Ph.D. Program in Electronic and Computer Engineering (DRIEI) at the University of Cagliari entitled "Machine Learning Security".

She was a teacher assistant for the course "Intelligenza Artificiale" (prof. Giorgio Fumera. Master of Science in Electronic Engineering) A.Y. 2014-2015 and for the course "Fondamenti di Informatica" (prof. Giorgio Fumera, University of Cagliari, Italy), A.Y. 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, 2016-2017, 2017-2018.

She has been a visiting professor for ten days at the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi'an, China, where she held some lectures about "Adversarial Machine Learning."

She is currently co-supervising a Ph.D. student of the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi'an, China, and has co-supervised two master students and supervised seven bachelor students.


Code. She is involved in the development of the Secure ML Library (SecML) library.
