  • LETSCROWD EU project (May 2017 - October 2019)
    LETSCROWD (Law Enforcement agencies human factor methods and Toolkit for the Security and protection of CROWDs in mass gatherings) is a project funded by the European Commission under the HORIZON 2020 Programme. Europe has suffered many criminal actions and terrorist attacks during mass gatherings, which have great impact on the citizens and the society, in the last few years. LEAs must face this new scenario (it is considered a priority by the European Union), which imposes a multitude of heterogeneous challenges. Hence, the key is to deter, prevent, protect, pursue and effectively respond to criminal and/or terrorist actions, achieving the best possible protection for people gathering in a specific area where particular events are taking place, thus increasing also the sense of security whit the necessary balance between protection and rights of EU citizens. For all these reasons, novel methodologies and tools must be investigated for strategic and operational activities, involving also strong cross-border cooperation and intelligence sharing, and planning solutions for all these issues, where the human and sociological factor is often the key driver. In fact, humans play a key role in every dimension of crowd protection against criminal and terrorist acts: as perpetrators, protectors and victims. 
    LETSCROWD will overcome challenges preventing the effective implementation of the European Security Model (ESM) with regards to mass gatherings. This will be achieved by providing the following to security policy practitioners and in particular, LEAs: (1) A dynamic risk assessment methodology for the protection of crowds during mass gatherings centred on human factors in order to effectively produce policies and deploy adequate solutions. (2) A policy making toolkit for the long-term and strategic decision making of security policy makers, including a database of empirical data, statistics and an analytical tool for security policies modelling, and (3) A set of human centred tools for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), including real time crowd behaviour forecasting, innovative communication procedures, semantic intelligence applied to social networks and the internet, and novel computer vision techniques.
    LETSCROWD will be a security practitioner driven project, fostering the communication and cooperation among LEAs, first responders, civil protection and citizens in the fight against crime and terrorism during mass gatherings by a set of cooperation actions. The project will put citizens at the centre of the research and will assess and evaluate how security measures affect them, and how they perceive them, while respecting EU fundamental rights. LETSCROWD impact will be measured under practical demonstrations involving seven LEAs and relevant emergency services units. In order to facilitate the assessment of the performance, transferability, scalability and large scale deployment of these solutions, the demonstrations will be conducted following eleven use cases.The project, lead by ETRA Investigación y Desarrollo S.A. (Spain), will be implemented by a consortium of 16 partners, from 8 different countries (including SMEs, universities, LEAs), operating in the critical areas of government, security, energy, finance, transport and utilities.

     

  • DOGANA EU project (September 2015 - August 2018)
    The advent of Social Networks has made both companies and public bodies tremendously exposed to the so-called Social Engineering 2.0, and thus prone to  targeted cyber-attacks. Unfortunately, there is currently no solution available on the market that allows neither the comprehensive assessment of Social Vulnerabilities nor the management and reduction of the associated risk.  
    DOGANA aims to fill this gap by developing a framework that delivers "aDvanced sOcial enGineering And vulNerability Assessment". The underlying concept of DOGANA is that Social Vulnerabilities Assessments (SVAs), when regularly performed with the help of an efficient framework, help deploy effective mitigation strategies and lead to reducing the risk created by modern Social Engineering 2.0 attack techniques. Two relevant features of the proposed framework are: i) the presence of the "awareness" component within the framework as the cornerstone of the mitigation activities; ii) the legal compliance by design of the whole framework, that will be ensured by a partner and a  work package explicitly devoted to this task. Moreover, the outcomes of the project are also expected to provide a solid basis to revise the insurance models for cyber-attacks related risks, thanks to the involvement of 2 strong DOGANA partners in this area of activity.
    The project will be implemented by a consortium of 18 partners, from 11 different countries, including users, technology providers of whom 3 are major world-wide cyber-security solutions market leaders as well as legal and psychological expertise. An extensive field trial plan enables the testing of the DOGANA platform with six users (4 partners and 2 supporting users) operating in the critical areas of energy, finance, transport, utilities, and public authorities.

  • SIVS 3.0 (December 2012 - December 2015)
    SIVS 3.0 - Sistema di Video Sorveglianza basato su VCA e IP - is a project funded by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna - Regional Government of Sardinia (POR FESR 2007/2013 - PIA 2010 - industria, artigianato e servizi per la selezione di interventi a sostegno della competitività e dell’innovazione). The specific objective of the project is the development of a framework for 3rd generation and advanced videosurveillance systems, based on the following characteristics:
    1. Advanced technologies of video recognition (Video Content Analysis, VCA), specifications for video surveillance systems;
    2. Ability to manage different sensors, in addition to the video streams (data fusion);
    3. Interconnections between servers, analyzer VCA, video streams, sensors and actuators via IP protocol;
    4. Intelligent management of events and alarms, hierarchically and warning thresholds configurable;
    5. System based on an "event queue"

  • PISDAS (June 2016 - March 2019)
    PISDAS (Piattaforma Integrata Servizi Digitali Avanzati Sicuri) is a project funded by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna - Regional Government of Sardinia (POR FESR 2007/2013 - PIA 2013 - industria, artigianato e servizi per la selezione di interventi a sostegno della competitività e dell’innovazione). The specific objectives of the project are:
    - Study and and definition of the digital processes that require Advanced Security systems and State-of-the-art analysis of digital technologies and related legal aspects.
    - Optimization of digital identity services, information security (cybersecurity), electronic payment systems, contrast of computer frauds. The research and design activities are aimed to define algorithms and software modules for: i) the creation of a framework for the integration of applications' functionalities; ii) the collection and the analysis of information and the development of forward-looking risk models; iii) the adaptive and dynamic monitoring of risk levels of the developed digital models; iv) introduction of cybersecurity techniques for the optimization of protection measures.
    - Experimental development of demonstrators and prototypes of the complete software framework, including all macro-leading functionalities.
    PRA Lab's role focuses on the following points: identification of supporting tools and methods for the forensic analysis of digital contents in order to ensure their integrity and prevent their unauthorized modifications and manipulations; identification of innovative technologies for the detection and prevention of unauthorized intrusions to systems/services, digital data and web applications (e.g. Electronic payment systems, anti-fraud computer systems, etc.); support in writing secure code, according with OWASP and ISO 15408 standards.

  • FORC EU project (January 2017 - October 2019)
    FORC (Pathway in Forensic Computing) is a project funded by the European Commission under the ERASMUS+ programme. The project, lead by University of Cagliari - PRA Lab, involves 8 partners from Europe (UK, Ireland), Palestine and Jordan, aims to improve the level of competences and skills of the partner universities in Palestine and Jordan by enabling them to develop sustainable integrated curricula in Forensic Computing, across the domains of Law and technology. The specific objectives of the project are:
    - To update the bachelor programs by defining the structure of the new Forensic Computing Pathway, which recognized by all consortium partners.
    - To develop, validate and implement a set of courses 8 courses, on emerging areas of Forensic Computing that address the following: Digital Investigation, Issues in Criminal Justice, Digital Forensics, Ethical Hacking, Digital Evidence.
    - To develop 4 case studies in Forensic Computing using student-centred adaptive elearning contemporary education methodology, which focused on computer crime and computer Investigation.
    - To improve the level of competencies and skills of staff in partner country universities by (i) training visits for staff to EU partners to develop Forensic Computing expertise in curriculum development and innovative learning, and (ii) providing research collaboration opportunities with EU staff through joint- supervision of students' projects.
    - Additionally, to create opportunities of collaboration between academia and industry in Forensic Computing field.
    - To establish Forensic Computing laboratories at partner countries universities, which will be used for teaching and research.

  • A^3I (July 2015 - November 2018)
    A^3I (Advanced Analysis of Aerial Images) is a project funded by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna - Regional Government of Sardinia (POR FESR 2007/2013 - PIA 2013 - industria, artigianato e servizi per la selezione di interventi a sostegno della competitività e dell’innovazione). The use of computer vision and pattern recognition techniques for the elaboration of aerial images acquired via an aerial platform, opens the door to a wide range of applications of general interest. In this context this project focuses on the development of innovative technologies for storage, management and automatic elaboration of aerial filming/mapping, also using drones, for territorial control and monitoring. Images and videos acquired, will be elaborated through specific algorithms of computer vision and pattern recognition in order to furnish the operators with information of high semantic content, such as the presence -in specific images/areas- of elements or activities of interest.

  • BS2R (May 2016 - May 2018)
    BS2R (Beyond Social Semantic Recommendation) is industrial R&D project funded by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna - Regional Government of Sardinia (POR FESR 2007/2013 - PIA 2013 - industria, artigianato e servizi per la selezione di interventi a sostegno della competitività e dell’innovazione). The project proposes the creation of a software platform characterized by aspects of social interaction between users through trust rank mechanisms for the measurement of user and resource links. The platform, based on the social correlation engine AVIC, provides for its evolution by means of the study of issues related to Social Networking, the integration with open-source Knowledge Management Systems for the unified management of corporate knowledge, the introduction of of the semantic Web technology to improve the quality of research and of the correlation between documents and users. PRA Lab's contribution to the project activities focuses on the study and the development of techniques for the analysis of visual contents and their relevance respect to social interactions that develop on the web networks.

  • CyberROAD EU project (June 2014- May 2016)
    CyberROAD (Development of the Cybercrime and Cyber-terrorism Research Roadmap) is a project funded by the European Commission, under the Seventh Framework Programme. This project will identify current and future issues in the fight against Cyber crime and cyber terrorism in order to draw a roadmap for cyber security research. A detailed snapshot of the technological, social, economic, political, and legal scenario on which cyber crime and cyber terrorism do develop will be first provided. Then, cyber crime and cyber terrorism will be studied, in order to indetify priorities and research bottlenecks.

  • ILLBuster EU project (February 2014 - February 2016)
    ILLBuster is a project funded by the European Commission (DG-HOME) within the programme "Prevention of and Fight against Crime". The goal of the project is to develop an integrated system (ILLBuster) for the automatic discovery of illegal activities on the internet network. The system is thought to be a valuable tool to be used by LEAs in their activities of prevention of and fight against (cyber)crime. The system proposed within this project will consist of: a main engine responsible for detecting and blacklisting malicious domains; a set of peripheral-services that will inspect web pages hosted by malicious domains looking for illegal or dangerous material.
    These analysis services will detect child pornography material, malware or phishing. The resulting system will first identify malicious domains through an analysis of the DNS traffic, will then locate malicious contents hosted by these, and will finally report LEAs suspicious URLs so that the illegal ones can be easily identified.
    A peculiar feature of the proposed system is that it will be “legally compliant” by design, as the legal aspects which regulates its use will be kept in mind since the early stage of its development. The ILLBuster project will have a duration of 24 months.

  • MAVEN EU project (october 2013 - october 2015)
    MAVEN (Management and Authenticity Verification of multimedia contENts) is a collaborative project among seven european partners, which  has been selected by the European Commission as one of the projects funded under the “Research for the benefit of SMEs” programme, in the 7th Framework Programme. The focus of this programme is to foster applied research driven by the needs of small and medium-sized companies, with the aim of producing a positive impact on their business in the short term. As for MAVEN, its technical goal is to develop market-ready, efficient and robust tools for the management and authenticity verification of multimedia contents.
    Why MAVEN? Despite the advances in the Security and Media sectors, MAVEN arises from the need of providing such industries with a suite of advanced technological solutions, able to operate in a range of realistic scenarios (CCTV, web images, broadcast data, etc).  The project results will allow SMEs, law enforcement bodies, press agencies, insurance companies and broadcasting companies, among others, to manage their multimedia assets and verify its integrity and authenticity, all in an efficient and scalable manner.
    What will MAVEN do? MAVEN project will develop of a set of tools for  multimedia data management and security. The project’s objectives will be centered on two key concepts: “SEARCH” and “VERIFY”, both integrated in a coherent manner. This “search and verify” concept is not supported in an integrated manner by any tool currently available in the market.
