Fingerprint Classification

Fingerprint classification consists in classifying the shape given by the flow of ridges and valleys on a fingerprint among the five fundamental classes defined by Sir Edward Henry in 1890. These classes are still used in the modern Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFISs) by the Scientific Investigation Office of the police around the world.

PRA Lab contributed to the state-of-the-art on fingerprint classification by the development of algorithms based on structural characteristics of the fingertip shape, combined with other methods in the literature, based on simpler measurements extraction from the ridges and valleys flow.
